About BLITZ(Lite)

Blitz FX (from the German word for "lightning") is a free tool for Blackmagic Design Fusion and DaVinci Resolve, designed to create a variety of electrical and lightning effects. With fine-grained controls, it empowers artists to craft imaginative visuals.

Blitz FX is free for commercial use—no donations required (though a bottle of rum is always welcome!). Patrons gain early access to beta builds, exclusive tutorials, and the chance to shape development, including naming rights in the fuse.

LITE FEATURES

EFFECT GROW

GROW EFFECT WITH ADJUSTABLE START AND END POINT, PLUS LENGTH BASED ENERGY.

EFFECT SMOOTHNESS

SMOOTHNESS ALLOWS TO CREATE A PLASMA EFFECT

  • Controllable Points: Easily set start and end points, which can be linked to tracker tools.

  • Smoothness & Magic Effects: Create magical energy effects by adjusting point density and resolution settings.

  • Energy Controls: Customize energy falloff, phase change, and flow rate (minor bugs under review).

  • Growth & Depth Settings: Progress effects with adjustable points, plus in-depth controls for branch length, angle, and more.

  • Debug & Preview: Per-depth branch coloring and built-in xGlow preview.

  • Additional Features: Comprehensive, creative tools to refine effects.

Known issues

  • it is currently not possible to assure you always have exact the same lightning shape. It means, every time you tweak something, the lightning's shape will change. Usually this is not an issue as most shape will look natural.

  • phase change rate wonky which causes to change the lightning in an unnatural way.

  • force seed tries to keep the shape at all costs. However the micro jitter seizes to work. As I said, at all costs :)

  • branch angle issue where level 3's ( third branches) would start disappearing if above 0.0

  • gain in the styling tab not affecting the alpha

Both the Lite and Pro versions of this fuse can be shared and used commercially. The Lite version will also be available on Reactor.

Before you dive in TIPS

  • Glow Tools: You'll need Bryan Ray's Xglow for compositing, or Emilio's FastExpoGlow as an alternative. The built-in Blitz glow is for previews only. Use post-glow for better control, as glow can sometimes make lightning appear overly thick. Check the demo composition for guidance.

  • Performance Optimization: If Blitz runs slowly, deactivate HiQ and enable proxy mode to fine-tune effects responsively.

  • Lightning Intensity: Adjust energy to reduce intensity, or tweak the gain in the style tab for more nuanced control.
